Te Kāpehu Whetū hit the track at EVolocity Regional Finals

After months of hard work, ākonga from Te Kāpehu Whetū finally got to put their electric vehicle to the test at the EVolocity Auckland Regional Finals last Thursday.

It was their first time competing, and they were up against schools from across the wider Auckland region, all racing electric vehicles that they had designed and built themselves.

Through our partnership with EVolocity, Tū Ātea has been supporting ākonga from Te Kāpehu Whetū to get hands-on experience in engineering and technology.

Through the process they learnt how electric motors and circuits work and got an understanding of the design aspect. This programme has given them the chance to learn new skills and see what they're capable of creating.

When the big race day arrived, driving their vehicles on the track was the chance to put all that learning into action.

While it was their first time on the track, they weren't fazed by the competition. They gave it their best and came away with plenty of ideas on how to make their vehicle even better and faster next year.

Supporting programmes like EVolocity is about giving our taiohi opportunities to explore technology in a way that's practical, exciting and relevant to them. It's also about opening their eyes to the possibilities of a future in engineering, technology and innovation.

Nei rā te mihi nui ki a koutou. To the ākonga and kaiako from Te Kāpehu Whetū for all the mahi they've put in, and of course to EVolocity for helping make these opportunities possible.
